# How long does it take to transfer a domain name?

**Domain transfers don't take the same amount of time for every extension. European extensions (such as `.nl`, `.be` and `.eu`) usually complete **immediately**, while global extensions (such as `.com` and `.net`) take **5 to 7 days** due to ICANN rules. Below you'll find what to expect per extension.**

|| This article covers the transfer duration for the most commonly used extensions. To find out which information you need to transfer your domain name, see [What information do I need to transfer my domain name?](https://help.xynta.com/en/article/what-information-do-i-need-to-transfer-my-domain-name-1x5023b/).

### European extensions

European ccTLDs (country code top-level domains) typically transfer **immediately** — once you've provided the transfer code, the transfer is completed within minutes to hours.

| Extension | Transfer duration |
| --------- | ----------------- |
| `.nl` | Immediate |
| `.be` | Immediate — after the holder confirms the transfer by email |
| `.eu` | Immediate — after the holder confirms the transfer by email |
| `.de` | Immediate |
| `.fr` | Immediate |
| `.es` | Immediate |
| `.it` | Immediate |
| `.at` | Immediate |
| `.ch` | Immediate |
| `.nu` | Immediate |
| `.cz` | Immediate |
| `.pl` | Immediate |
| `.se` | Immediate |

| For `.be` and `.eu`, the transfer duration in practice depends on how quickly the domain holder responds to the confirmation email. Make sure the holder's email address is current beforehand.

### gTLDs (global extensions)

Global extensions (gTLDs) are governed by ICANN rules. These rules give the current provider **5 days** to approve or reject the transfer. In practice, a transfer therefore takes an average of **5 to 7 days**.

| Extension | Transfer duration |
| --------- | ----------------- |
| `.com` | 5 to 7 days |
| `.net` | 5 to 7 days |
| `.org` | 5 to 7 days |
| `.info` | 5 to 7 days |
| `.biz` | 5 to 7 days |
| `.me` | 5 to 7 days |
| `.mobi` | 5 to 7 days |
| `.pro` | 5 to 7 days |
| `.name` | 5 to 7 days |
| `.xyz` | 5 to 7 days |
| `.online` | 5 to 7 days |
| `.shop` | 5 to 7 days |
| `.store` | 5 to 7 days |
| `.app` | 5 to 7 days |
| `.dev` | 5 to 7 days |
| `.blog` | 5 to 7 days |
| `.site` | 5 to 7 days |
| `.tech` | 5 to 7 days |

|| With some providers you can **speed up** the transfer by manually approving it in your current provider's control panel. This skips the automatic waiting period and completes the transfer within 1 to 2 days.

### United Kingdom (.uk variants)

For `.uk` extensions the transfer works **immediately** after your current provider changes the registrar tag to `KEY-SYSTEMS-DE`.

| Extension | Transfer duration |
| --------- | ----------------- |
| `.co.uk` | Immediate after registrar tag change |
| `.uk` | Immediate after registrar tag change |
| `.org.uk` | Immediate after registrar tag change |
| `.me.uk` | Immediate after registrar tag change |

### Other popular extensions

| Extension | Transfer duration |
| --------- | ----------------- |
| `.co` | 5 to 7 days |
| `.io` | 5 to 7 days |
| `.tv` | 5 to 7 days |
| `.cc` | 5 to 7 days |
| `.ws` | 5 to 7 days |

### Why do .com and .net take longer?

Global extensions (`.com`, `.net`, `.org` and other gTLDs) are governed by **ICANN** — the organisation that manages these extensions. For each transfer, your **current provider has 5 days** to respond. During that period the provider can:

* **Approve** — the transfer completes immediately.
* **Reject** — for example in case of an outstanding invoice or an active lock.
* **Not respond** — the transfer is automatically approved after 5 days.

In practice the entire process takes an average of **5 to 7 days**. This is an **ICANN rule** that applies to every registrar worldwide — not something xYnta or your current provider can bypass.

### When is my website accessible again?

The transfer duration above refers to the **registration transfer** itself — not the moment when your website and email work via the new provider. That depends on the **nameservers and DNS propagation**.

* **Keeping the same nameservers?** Then you won't notice the transfer at all — your website and email remain accessible throughout.
* **Changing nameservers?** It can take **24 to 48 hours** for the change to propagate worldwide. During this period, it's best to keep both providers running in parallel until propagation completes.
