How long does it take to transfer a domain name?
Domain transfers don't take the same amount of time for every extension. European extensions (such as .nl, .be and .eu) usually complete **immediately, while global extensions (such as .com and .net) take 5 to 7 days due to ICANN rules. Below you'll find what to expect per extension.**

European extensions
European ccTLDs (country code top-level domains) typically transfer immediately — once you've provided the transfer code, the transfer is completed within minutes to hours.

.be and .eu, the transfer duration in practice depends on how quickly the domain holder responds to the confirmation email. Make sure the holder's email address is current beforehand.gTLDs (global extensions)
Global extensions (gTLDs) are governed by ICANN rules. These rules give the current provider 5 days to approve or reject the transfer. In practice, a transfer therefore takes an average of 5 to 7 days.

Why do .com and .net take longer?
Global extensions (.com, .net, .org and other gTLDs) are governed by ICANN — the organisation that manages these extensions. For each transfer, your current provider has 5 days to respond. During that period the provider can:
- Approve — the transfer completes immediately.
- Reject — for example in case of an outstanding invoice or an active lock.
- Not respond — the transfer is automatically approved after 5 days.
In practice the entire process takes an average of 5 to 7 days. This is an ICANN rule that applies to every registrar worldwide — not something xYnta or your current provider can bypass.
When is my website accessible again?
The transfer duration above refers to the registration transfer itself — not the moment when your website and email work via the new provider. That depends on the nameservers and DNS propagation.
- Keeping the same nameservers? Then you won't notice the transfer at all — your website and email remain accessible throughout.
- Changing nameservers? It can take 24 to 48 hours for the change to propagate worldwide. During this period, it's best to keep both providers running in parallel until propagation completes.
Is your extension not listed? Feel free to get in touch with your extension, and we'll look up the transfer duration for you.
