WordPress Website Optimization
Optimizing your WordPress website
There are several ways to optimize your WordPress website for faster loading and better handling of simultaneous visitors. Below are a number of easy-to-implement tips:
- Use a recent PHP version:
PHP 7 is much faster than PHP 5, and PHP 8 is even faster than PHP 7. Always use the second most recent PHP version.
More info: Changing PHP version (Web- and Reseller Hosting) or Changing PHP version (WordPress Hosting).
- Optimize your PHP settings:
Recommended settings:
max_input_vars
: 5000memory_limit
: 512Mpost_max_size
: 128Mupload_max_filesize
: 128M
Also ensure the redis
and opcache
extensions are enabled.
- Use (server-side) caching:
Install LiteSpeed Cache if supported, otherwise use W3 Total Cache.
- Limit the number of plugins:
Ideally, use no more than 25 plugins. Remove unused plugins and select well-maintained ones.
- Optimize your database:
Clean up old data and regularly optimize the database.
More info: Database optimization (Web- and Reseller Hosting).
- Keep WordPress, themes, and plugins updated:
Regular updates not only enhance security but also improve performance.
- Check log files for errors:
Errors can significantly slow down your site. Check and resolve them.
More info: Viewing log files (Web- and Reseller Hosting) or Viewing log files (WordPress Hosting).
- Disable WP_CRON:
Configure WP_CRON as a real cronjob to reduce server load.
More info: Disabling WP_CRON for better performance.
- Choose a lightweight and well-maintained theme:
Paid themes (e.g., via ThemeForest) often offer better support and performance.
